2013 ARRL Field Day

07/16/2013 | K4RC

Field Day 2013, K4RC, The Williamsburg Area Amateur Radio Club

Field Day 2013 got off to a great start for the Williamsburg Area Amateur Radio Club. We operated 2A using our club call K4RC with one station dedicated to CW and another to phone, plus our GOTA station. We had good results at all stations, and the weather was good with only light rain during the Saturday night shift, but our best highlight came on Sunday.

On Sunday, June 23, 2013, while traveling through the Williamsburg, VA area, Tim Riddell and his 11 year old daughter, Sylvia, decided to check out the Field Day exercise. They said they found our site by using the ARRL Field Day locator web site. They were interested in seeing the operation because they are both studying for their Technician Licenses.

After introductions, we described the purpose and operation of our Field Day setup. Then we asked if they would be interested in operating our GOTA station. One of our members (N4DJ) worked as GOTA Coach for Sylvia as she made 30 contacts. While talking with Tim, we learned Sylvia is even learning Morse code.

While Sylvia obviously had a ball getting on the air, I am not sure who was more pleased – Sylvia, her Dad, or the club members. It looks like there is another bright star in the future of Amateur Radio.
