2013 ARRL August UHF Contest

08/04/2013 | W0JT

I had the four lower bands (222-1296) working properly, but conditions were dismal and participation was scant. I only managed to make 13 QSO's all day Saturday, and by the time I paused for a little overnight sleep, I had not succeeded in working any of the local rovers who were out and about. I did hear a couple of them but was unable to tail-end with them as they jumped to the 2304 MHz band, which I did not have in operation.

Fortunately, Sunday was much more productive by comparison, although still pretty quiet. On Sunday, I managed to connect with four of the rovers, adding 24 QSO's (fully half of my total!) and adding 2 more unique band-grid combinations. Without the rovers my score would have been absolutely atrocious. Because I also failed to tail-end on 902 MHz in the last few minutes of the contest, I missed almost 700 points with 5 stations that I easily heard and should have been able to work. By the time I got their attention, the contest was over! I guess I need to learn to pounce even harder when I hear a QSO finishing up.

Equipment-wise, all four bands survived through the entire contest this time, which was not the case two months ago during the June VHF contest, so I am thankful for that.

Now, I need to get ready for the 10 GHz & Up Cumulative Contest which rolls around in 13 days!
