2013 ARRL Field Day
It was a lovely start of summer again this year, but there was no shortage of experimental evidence for
Murphy's Law as the Marconi Radio Club of Newfoundland Signal Hill Splinter Group attempted FD13.
A few weeks ahead of the event as we put the VO1ZA 6 m beacon back on the air, Kris asked what we were
doing for FD. A week before the event at an art show, we discussed the university as a venue but
more notice was needed! Len couldn't make it Saturday and other participants were few and far between.
Following Len's suggestion that we do a mobile op from Signal Hill, yours truly went up there with
everything for a QRP operation --- except the antenna! After retrieving it from the living room table
and returning to the hill, the silly thing got contrary and refused to accept RF on the 3740 kHz Net QRG... or was it
a change in stray capacitance? Anyway it tuned easily on 20m CW and things went smoothly thereafter.
There were interested spectators who had many questions and it was great fun explaining it all to them.
Only a few contacts, but lovely conditions, strong signals and not a trace of noise. There must be
something special about that site having to do with radio. Marconi would have been proud!
