2013 ARRL 10 Meter Contest
'Back in the day' I spent many lazy hot afternoons on 10 meter AM, using the 50-watt homebrew transmitter and arm-rotated 3-element 'plumbers' delight' beam at LU5DGQ's station. The first ARRL 10-meter contest was still years in the future but through these afternoons I acquired a special appreciation for 10 meters. Some years later I made sure to operate in the first ever ARRL 10 meter contest, and I continue to participate whenever possible.
So it was with some interest that this year I found that a visit to Argentina overlapped the 10 meter contest weekend. Although I had just arrived and had limited time, Eduardo LW3DG met me on Saturday afternoon so that I could try out the band.
First station heard was N8II, located near my home station in WV. Jeff was busy running W's undoubtedly many dB's louder than me so after a couple of tries I hurried lower to the tech subband and established a CQ frequency. Although propagation favored the U.S., a couple of Europeans managed to find my 90 watt signal with the 3-el tribander pointed dead center on Kansas. These guys are good: GM5X, EE5T, EE2W, & ED5Z. Other notables were on the other side of the world: WH7DX, JA1NVF & RN0CT.
A big thank you to LW3DG. And thank you for the Q's, see you next year.
73, Dave K3ZJ
