Call Sign Renewals or Changes

Amateur applications can be filed manually using paper forms or electronically via the FCC website. Filing interactively is easy and the results are immediate.

To renew or update a license, amateurs may file manually using FCC Form 605 or file interactively on the FCC ULS website using their FCC issued Federal Registration Number (FRN) and password. FCC permits administrative updates and call sign changes at any time. License renewals are allowed at 90 days or less before a license will expire, and when the license has expired but is still within the two-year grace period for renewal. Licenses that have been expired for more than two years are not eligible for renewal or reinstatement.

Filing Procedures

  • Choose the method that is right for you.

  • Filing For a New Vanity Call Sign Via FCC.

This procedure must be done directly with the FCC.  Filing for a Vanity License can be done electronically via the FCC ULS web site.  For additional information see the ARRL Vanity Call Sign page or refer to the "File Electronically with FCC via the Web" section below. The FCC takes 18 days to process and issue a New Vanity License.

  • File Electronically with FCC Via the Web.

The FCC accepts changes and renewals electronically via their Universal Licensing Service (ULS) system. You may file for electronic renewal at 90 days or less before your license will expire, or up to two years after expiration. License changes may be filed at anytime. The FCC's web address for electronic filing is: http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/ . To use the FCC ULS system for online filing, you must first be sure you are registered in the Commission Registration System (CORES) and have a Federal Registration Number (FRN) and CORES password to work with your FCC license record. To receive a FRN you must supply your Social Security Number (SSN) to FCC. As part of their compliance with the Debt Collection Improvement Act of 1996, FCC must collect SSN's. Once registered, you may then choose the ONLINE FILING "LOG IN" link to perform your on-line transaction with FCC (for password help or on-line filing questions contact FCC Tech Support weekdays at: 1-877-480-3201).

You can apply for a New Vanity Call Sign or a Vanity License Renewal through the FCC ULS system at http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/.  You may request a sequentially issued call sign at the time of your vanity renewal, if you do not wish to keep the vanity call sign.

Your FCC license renewal or change(s) should be in place almost immediately. The FCC takes 18 days to process and issue a New Vanity License.

  • File Via Mail to FCC.

Processing time can vary depending on the FCC's workload. If you file your change or renewal electronically or via ARRL, the process may take only a few days in order to renew your license. If you file by hardcopy via mail to FCC, the FCC might take several weeks to process your change or renewal. You may file your license change or license renewal by mail directly to the FCC. ONLY "FCC" Form 605 is accepted by FCC. Download FCC Forms. After completing the form, you can mail your FCC Form 605 to:  FCC, 1270 Fairfield Rd, Gettysburg PA 17325-7245.

  • File Via Mail to ARRL.

The NCVEC Form 605 must be sent to the ARRL VEC. If sent directly to the FCC, it will be rejected.  License modifications/changes and renewals will be processed for FREE for current ARRL members as part of your membership services.

The NCVEC Form 605 is for VEC and VE use only. This form is used at exam sessions when applicants are applying for a new or upgrade Amateur Radio license.  The form can also be used to renew, update or modify a license. This form cannot be sent to FCC.  There is no charge to current ARRL members when submitting NCVEC Form 605 for license renewals or changes (address, name, email, etc.). For NON-members who wish to change or renew their license, there is a $15 charge to use the ARRL VEC service. The NCVEC Form 605 does not have a space for obtaining a duplicate license, but you can simply write 'Duplicate' on the form and it will be processed by the ARRL VEC.

If you file via ARRL, the process may take only a few days in order to change or renew your license, once ARRL receives it. An official copy of your license will be provided if you include an email address on the form. If you have any questions, contact the ARRL VEC.

  • Club and Military Recreation License Renewals and Changes.

The ARRL VEC Form 605-C must be sent to the ARRL VEC. If sent directly to the FCC, it will be rejected.

The FCC has privatized the club call sign assignment program. Any club or military-recreation license must go through a Club Station Call Sign Administrator (CSCSA) of which the ARRL VEC is one. The FCC no longer accepts applications directly from clubs, unless the club is requesting a new Vanity Call Sign or renewing a Vanity Call Sign.

Clubs that hold Vanity Call Signs may electronically renew their FCC issued licenses online via the FCC web using FCC ULS or through a CSCSA. All other Vanity Club license changes or updates may only be done through a CSCSA.

ARRL VEC Form 605-C can be used to update or renew a Club License or a Military Recreation Station License.  ARRL cannot process requests for NEW vanity call sign. They must be done directly with FCC. For Club or Miltitary Recreation License filing instructions see Club Station License Application Filing Procedures.
