See the Installation Notes for help installing the ARRL Antenna Book CD, particularly under WINDOWS VISTA.
A replacement file for Table 19 in Chapter 18 is now available in PDF Format.
These YW files were inadvertently left off the CD-ROM.
An updated version 2.03 of the TLW program is available. This corrects a minor bug in the calculation of effective Q for the Pi low-pass antenna tuner network. (An updated version of the DOS TLA program that corrects the same bug is also included with the TLW update.)
Download the file TLW3B.zip, and extract the contents into the subdirectory where TLW3.EXE and TLW.PDF are presently located. Unless you manually specified another location during installation, the default installation subdirectory is:
c:\Program Files\ARRL\Antbk20\XmsnLines

The very sketchy schematic of the Carolina Windom antenna in Fig 13 confused some readers, especially those who were accustomed to seeing a traditional single-wire-feed Windom. The revised drawing Fig 13 shows that the coax shields are connected in the usual fashion to the current balun "line isolator" and the 4:1 transformer "matching unit."
During a completely new software installation using SETUP.EXE from the CD-ROM, the main "Setup Type" window allows you to choose either:
The default selection is Custom. Because this is supposed to be for "advanced users" this choice has worried some users so they have chosen Complete. Complete does indeed install all files, including all the elevation-angle statistical files for HFTA, rather than only the files from a selected geographic area. Complete installs everything in the default directories on the C: drive.
Custom allows you to choose directories, if you wish, and you can select a specific geographic area for the elevation files. For example, if you live in Los Angeles you'd choose the West Coast elevation-angle files.
If you run SETUP.EXE on the CD-ROM again, the main opening "Welcome" window gives you three choices:
If you wish to remove a single program that was already installed (for example, HFTA), you would click on Modify and unselect HFTA and then follow the instructions to finish the installation. Or if you wished to add a set of elevation-angle files, say, for Europe, you would make that selection and then follow the instructions to finish the installation.
The Remove function will remove all programs that were previously installed. We have seen a small number of intermittent instances where some programs refuse to automatically uninstall, so you might have to go to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs to clear these out manually.
Let's say that you wish to install most of the programs and files in a different directory system on a different hard drive -- say, d:\ARRL. Then let's assume that you want to install EZNEC ARRL in a subdirectory different from the default, which is c:\Program Files\EZW. Let's say you want it in d:\ARRL\EZNEC. This will work fine, but make sure you do not use "d:\ARRL\EZNEC ARRL." That is, don't use the specific subdirectory "EZNEC ARRL" (with a space). This is a temporary subdirectory used by EZNEC ARRL's installation program, and it is deleted automatically after installation, erasing most of the files you just installed!
Another caution: We recommend that you do not change from the default directory for the MicroDEM program. (The default is "c:\Program Files\MicroDEM--6.0.") MicroDEM is usually the last program installed by SETUP.EXE.
An updated version of TLW corrects a minor bug in the calculation of the additional loss due to SWR (out beyond three decimal places, for you purists!). In addition an updated help file adds back the graphic for Fig 6 on page 12. This mysteriously disappeared in the original file. Download the file tlw3.zip, extract it, and copy both files over the present file versions. If you did a default software installation, the subdirectory where TLW3.EXE and TLW.pdf are located is:
c:\Program Files\ARRL\AntBk20\XmsnLines
TLA.EXE and TLA.PDF were inadvertently left off the installation CD-ROM. TLA.EXE is an older DOS program that performs most of the functionality of the Windows TLW program, for users who aren't running Windows. You may download tla.zip here.
A new HFTA.pdf file reverses the left and right borders (longitude) in the sample instructions on page 7 for downloading a NED file. Download HFTA.pdf into the subdirectory where the HFTA files are located. If you did a standard installation it will be located in:
c:\Program Files\ARRL\AntBk20\Terrain
