2005 ARRL HANDBOOK CORRECTIONS AND UPDATES

Pages 4.22 and 4.23. In Equations 50 and 52, the numerator of the exponent of e should be "t" not "1". t is the time in seconds after initiation of charging current.

Chapter 4 — Page 4.39, the second-to-last paragraph below equation 81.  The sentence should read: “The total reactance of the circuit will be smaller than the larger of the individual reactances,….”

Page 4.50, the middle-column paragraph beginning with “The points shown in the graph in Fig 4.82…” Fig 4.81 is the correct figure cite, and that figure is located on the previous page.

Page 4.58, equation 134 is incorrect.  The term R-sub-L2 squared should be X-sub-L2 squared.

Chapter 6 — Page 6.12, the last paragraph on the page.  “For this reason, at RF a hollow tube and a solid rod of the same diameter…”

Chapter 7

Page 7.20. In Table 7.26, the plastic case should be labeled TO-226AA, not TO-206AA. The pinouts are correct.

Page 7.22. In Table 7.28, the Plastic Case base diagram (1) labels shouldread EBC, not BEC.

— Page 7.24.  In Table 7.30, TIP42 should be in the PNP column, not the NPN column as shown.

Pages 7.32 and 7.33.  In Table 7.37 (Triode Transmitting Tubes), the two columns labeled “Cathode” (V) and (A) should be understood as the “Filament” voltage (V) and current (A) ratings for the particular tubes listed.  The filament and cathode are basically the same elements in directly heated cathode tubes, and most—but not all—listed here are of this construction.

Table 7.38 (Tetrodes and Pentodes…) on page 7.33 contains numerous translation and other errors.  We deeply regret and apologize for these, especially where note superscripts became regular numbers as if part of an individual rating figure itself.  These are deciphered further below.  Also, counting over from the right-hand margin towards the left, the ninth and tenth column headings in this table should be labeled (adjusted) respectively:  “Plate (V)” and “Serv. Class1”.  The 6146A listing has a column shift that is off by “one column” to the right consistently from “Grid (V)” to “POUT (W)” at the far right.  Respectively (in that order), these column entries should be –62 / 120 / 11 / 3.1 / 0.2 / -- / 70 /.  The listings 6146B and 8298A are, in fact, the same tube — 6146B/8298A.  Further, the GG-class ratings for PIN and POUT for the 4-400A listing should be changed to, respectively, 399 and 435.  Also, the listings 4-1000A and 8166 are, in fact, the same tube—8166/4-1000A.  O.K., here are the superscript corrections:

6159B  “Grid (mA)” listings 2.62 and 1003 should be, respectively, 2.62 and 1003.

1625  “Grid (mA)” and “PIN (W)” listings should read, respectively, 5553 and 5.32.

813  The last two (AB2) “Grid (mA)” ratings should read 2303 and 2353.

8166    “Grid (mA)” and “PIN (W)” are, respectively, 1709 and 1309.

Table 7.39 on page 7.34, fourth column from the left should read “Transcond. (Micromhos)”

Table 7.45 on page 7.41.  Two critical translation errors should be corrected.  The abbreviations for large units of resistance — kilohm and megohm — are kW and MW, respectively, not kW and MW as shown.

Table 7.78 on page 7.60.  The Friendship, Rag Chewer’s Club and Old Timer’s Club Awards are no longer issued by the ARRL.

Chapter 10  On page 10.39, the middle portion of Fig 10.41 shows a vertical axis labeled “Phase” followed by a light square box.  The square box is a translation error and should in fact be the degree symbol: Phase °

Chapter 12  On page 12.28, the text just above the subhead “An Overview” directing the reader to the template location should read: …..is available on the CD included with this Handbook.

Chapter 17  On page 17.37, the note at the top of Fig 17.45 contains the wrong (old) Fig reference—Fig 11.51.  It should be Fig 17.46.

Chapter 18

Page 18.30, Figure 18.29. The RF choke that is connected to the junction of C9/C10/Z1 should be labeled RFC1. Part of the label is missing. The value for RFC1 in the parts list is correct.

Chapter 19  As referred to in the caption of Fig 19.63, “A” is on page 19.46 and “B” is on page 19.47.  This figure should have been labeled A and B accordingly.

Chapter 22  The Antenna Modeling by Computer sidebar on pages 22.12 and 22.13 contains two errors within both parenthetical expressions in Fig B.  The expression on the left of Fig B should read (0, –67.5 ´ Sin60°, 50 – 67.5 ´ Cos60°).  The expression on the right of Fig B should read (0, 67.5 ´ Sin60°, 50 – 67.5 ´ Cos60°).

On page 22.23, the sidebar text has an error in the third bulleted line below Table A within the sidebar.  That line should read: ….but can install 36 radials that are 0.15 l long (Case C), ….

On page 22.32, the ALL WIRE 30-M CVD project has a misspell in the short, second paragraph.  The word “blaun” should, of course, be “balun”.

Chapter 25  Denton Bramwell’s current call sign is W7DB, not K7OWJ as shown on pages 25.11 and 25.13, in the left and right column, respectively (THE MICROWATTER project).

On page 25.20, a translation error appears in the text of A WIDE-RANGE AUDIO OSCILLATOR project.  The second to last line in the right-hand column should read “light load (10 kW) is 4 to 5 V. This can be”…  (kW, as presently exists here, is the wrong unit of course.)
