2010 KY WEATHER CONFERENCE. Amateur radio received accolades and kudos during the 2010 KY EM Weather Conference held Jan. 15-16 in Bowling Green. The first-ever KY EM weather conference brought together EM managers, National Weather Service meteorologists, weather researchers, Amateur Radio operators and KY EM leadership. Why a conference focusing on weather? KY EM Director BG John Heltzel said the reason was simple: Severe weather is the top threat to the state, with a weather event taking place somewhere in Kentucky roughly every 90 days. There's no mitigation with severe weather, only preparedness. Heltzel told the conference attendees he would like for KY EM to be proactive rather than reactive when weather strikes. KY EM is interested in getting information as emergencies are unfolding in order to respond more quickly. The conference attendees studied how a statewide network of spotters could improve local emergency preparedness and response. GOOD MORNING KY PHONE NET MOVES. The Good Morning Kentucky Phone Net can now be found on 3970 kHz from 8:30-9 a.m. Monday through Friday. Continuing disputes with other Amateurs who have an issue with the net was one of the reasons for the move. The GMKYPN started in January 2004 after the Kentucky Phone Net was disbanded. HAITI DISASTER FREQUENCIES. At this writing, Amateur Radio operators are standing by for disaster communication coming out of Haiti on HF frequencies. The Salvation Army's SATERN net is operating on nets on the frequencies of 14.265, 7.265 and 3.977.7 MHz. IARU Region 2 nets are active on 7.045 and 3.720 MHz, and the International Assistance and Traffic Net is active on 14.300. WANTED: TRAFFIC HANDLERS, STM - With the 9th Region NTS Net meeting on a regular schedule, there's a need to have more outlets for traffic in Kentucky. Glenn Foley, KO4OL has been the Kentucky liaison for the 9RN, and picks up Kentucky-bound traffic. Kentucky is in need of traffic handlers throughout the state and a specific time and net to pass the traffic, reports Glenn Foley, KO4OL. Glenn reports he has great difficulty getting traffic anywhere west of I-65, especially the Glasgow and Bowling Green areas. Is 2010 the time for re-establishing an HF NTS phone net in Kentucky? With regular traffic coming into the state, coupled with a need for regular real-world training for traffic handling, I think it is. Kentucky has been without a Section Traffic Manager for more than six years, and it is time to re-activate that position. Anyone interested in taking on the role of STM can read the appointment description at this link and contact the Section Manager at ky4z@arrl.org. KDN - Would you be interested in starting a Kentucky Digital Net? Think of it as a digital modes training net which would give those of us who have dabbled in using various modes to actually get some practical, hands-on experience using them. Anyone who has an interest in seeing digital comms proliferate in Kentucky is welcomed to start the net and serve as Net Manager. Right now, the KDN is only a concept; but it is one that the SM and others are willing to help establish. What band? What day or days? What mode? All of these questions remain unanswered. Get involved today and let's get Kentucky moving into the digital age. Contact SM Jim Brooks, KY4Z, at ky4z@arrl.org or SEC Kenny Garrett, N4KLG at sec@kyham.net. SUPPORT KYHAM.NET. For many years, the KYHAM.net web site has been the resource for all things in Kentucky related to Amateur Radio. The KYHAM e-mail list is one of the valuable services that is free and an important resource for knowing what is going on in the Commonwealth. Signing up is simple and easy. Pat Spencer, KD4PWL, runs a tight ship, and you won't be receiving a lot of spam or junk mail. Visit KYHAM.net and click on the "Listserv" link on the lefthand menu. BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION: VOLUNTEER! The Kentucky Section is packed with talented and creative Amateurs whose skills are needed across the Commonwealth. Are you active in ARES? Does your county have an Emergency Coordinator? If not, would you like to serve in that capacity? Do you have an interest in giving back to our communities as a volunteer? Contact your county EC, DEC, ASEC or SEC Kenny Garrett, KG4HEV for information on being a communications volunteer. ACTIVITY REPORTS. Station Activity, Public Service or net reports are due to me by the 9th of each month. Your help in meeting this deadline is greatly appreciated in order that the KY Section web site is updated in a timely manner and the reports are submitted to ARRL HQ. The report forms on the KYHAM.NET web site are the easiest way for you to send in your reports. To submit an activity report, go to your local information page by clicking on "Local Info" on the left hand menu on KYHAM. All reports are routed to the proper coordinator. You may also send your reports directly to ky4z@arrl.org. |

1) Section: Kentucky _______________________________________________________________________________________ Comments: Minimum required ARES Training: KYARES Online Tests, FEMA IS-100, IS-200, IS-700 and IS-800. Recommended training for ARRL Field Station Appointees: ARRL EMCOMM Levels I and II. District 1: Graves County: Compiling list of county Hams. Will be sending letter to all county Hams this month to find those interested in joining ARES. Marshall County: Their new net had check ins from all over western KY and Fla and the Philippines via echo link. District 2: District 3: Union County, KJ4HNC: No repeater in Union Co. and no members or net at this time. I am working on it at this time. Webster County, AJ4SI: We had an exercise with the county in Slaughters. All emergency personel were involved. We had six people present with 4 hrs per person. Ohio County, NV9V: Spent 4 hours maintaining ARES repeater. Reviewed antenna requirements for new EOC for amateur radio setup. District 4: DEC KJ4DGW reports: Edmonson County has secured an ex-ambulance for conversion as Communications Support Vehicle. District 5: Hardin County, W8WN: Updated from Winmor msg of a couple of weeks ago. HC ARES is still trying to get a working repeater on the air. AI4VF has the Kenwood/Midland at his house (good location, 30' tower), and we found that the duplexers we got from Meade Co were still way off in tuning. Required 5 hours of hard work for a different tech to retune them. But the Midland receiver is still not right, though operating. Short range due to low ant & receiver problems. Freq 145.350- T 103.5 New call WX4HC. We have moved the GE repeater to KC4CQT's QTH. He has finally had time to look at it again and says that the receiver is probably not going to work. He's still looking into it. AI4VF has been given one of the old slope-front Regencies for use as a possible receiver, to use with the Kenwood xmtr. Reprogrammed OK, connections made, but then squelch went crazy. More work on it Tuesday. AI4VF has just been given 3 Motorola units for possible use. Only one could be reprogrammed. Waiting to see if it will work as a repeater District 6: District 8: District 9: Boyd/Greenup, K4XEM: Conducted Weekly nets and two activation nets in response to weather emergency the week before Christmas. 12/18/2009 Activation of 2m Net for informational purposes, 12/19/2009 activation of 2m net for informational purposes. All activation nets were conducted in support of Boyd and Greenup County EM, upon completion of net activation both Boyd and Greenup EM were contacted with activation informaiton and readiness of ARES program in the Area. Johnson County, N4KJU: 2 members of Johnson County ARES assisted in Health and welfare to Check on the status of an elderly rural resident after their family became concerned after atttempting to contact the person during the recent snow storm. The resident only uses a cordless phone and the phone was useless during a power outage as a result of the winter storm. The resident was located at a friends house warm and happy. Likewise hams were happy to have provided this service to the family. Lawrence County, KJ4GRJ: During the snow storm this month they opened the Lawrence county EOC to help people with power outages and the peak of the storm Lawrence had about 32% people without power. All of the county communication stayed up and running with exception of one repeater did not have battery backup. Communication was not hampered by the weather. I assisted in the county EOC answering the phones and locating supplys if needed. we had the high school on standby for a shelter if needed. The utility company got most of the power back on within 3 to 4 days in the county. District 10: District 11: District 12: District 13: Fayette County, KG4TNS: Happy New Year to all. We now have echolink on the K4UKH repeater !!! All are invited to check into the Fayette County ARES net on Wed nights 9PM via echolink ________________________________________________________________________________________ Note: The reporting section of KYHAM is functional. Please submit all monthly reports there. EC reports will go to their respective DECs for totaling. Areas with no DEC will still come to me. This will make reporting and accountability more streamlined. http://www.kyham.net/emcomm/reports.html. Reports are due to your respective DECs by the 5th of the month. DECs need to have their reports to me by the 10th of the month. Please fill out the reports completely so they do not get returned for correction. Please do not "test" the online system. __________________________________________________________________________________________ |
