Silent Key - Art DeBruycker W2YGW

It is with great sadness that I pass along that Art DeBruycker W2YGW became a silent key on Friday January 29th. Art was the net manager of the NYS CW net late session as well as the second region net. Art was a good friend and mentor to many, and kidded me on how my CW has gotten better, since I became a net control on NYS late on Saturady evenings. Art is very well known in Western New York and across the country in the National Traffic System. 73 Art we'll miss you.

    Arthur F. DeBruycker

DeBruycker, Arthur F. Fairport: January 29, 2010. Survived by his loving wife of 35 years. Arthur worked as a television engineer for several years around the Rochester area. He was also a ham radio operator for over 50 years. Arthur was also a US Army and Navy veteran serving in WWII and the Korean war. No prior calling. The family will hold a Memorial Service at the First Congregational UCC Church of Fairport later this Spring to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational UCC Church of Fairport in his memory. Arr: R.H. Keenan Funeral Home. 223-0094 or 223-4840

The George Hart Distinguished Service Award

Congratulations to Bud W2RU for receiving the George Hart Distinguished Service Award bestowed by the ARRL board of directors at it's annual meeting. The George Hart Distinguished Service Award is conferred upon an ARRL member for exemplary service with the National Traffic System, the Amateur Radio Emergency Service® (ARES®), or station appointments and/or leadership positions held within the ARRL Field Organization. The award is named for longtime ARRL Communications Manager George Hart, W1NJM.

George W. "Bud" Hippisley, W2RU, was first licensed in 1954 as KN2KIR and has been active in the NTS since 1955, serving as Eastern Area Net Manager since 1964 -- including a stint as Chairman of the NTS Eastern Area Staff from 1976-1983. He has also been active in ARES® and RACES since 1955. Hippisley has received numerous awards from the ARRL, citing his commitment to providing emergency communications and for his longtime support as the Eastern Area Net Manager and net control station. His leadership positions with the ARRL Field Organization include service as the Western New York Communications Manager (1974-1975), Western New York Section Emergency Coordinator (1997-1999) and Atlantic Division Vice Director (1982-1985). He has also served as Official Relay Station (ORS), Official Bulletin Station (OBS), Official Observer (OO), Route Manager (RM) and Official Traffic Station (OTS).

Please join me in congratulating Bud on this fine and well deserved recognition!

Congratulations to the Liverpool Amateur Repeater Club (W2CM) on celebrating 25 years in Amateur Radio.

Hey! I see that John got a new call W2PIO, very nice. Who's John? Well he used to be KC2HMZ. John is also known as the Amateur Radio Association of the Tonawanda's (W2SEX) president. Wow, ARATS has been around for 56 years! Congratulations.

    Hamfest Sponsors !

Generally most Western New York hamfests have well established dates and occur the same weekend from year to year. Please try your best not to choose a date that is already taken or a date you know another hamfest always uses, even if they have not announced their date yet. Conflicting hamfests draw attendees away from each other, and besides I can't go to both. If you are in doubt check with the other hamfest first if you think your date might conflict with them.

Hamfest information on this web page is taken from the ARRL hamfest listings, and information I receive from the hamfest sponsor.

Please sanction your hamfest with the ARRL at http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/hamfests/. You get a few door prizes and it helps you to avoid date conflicts with other WNY Hamfests.

    Local BPL News

No news is good news. Anyone read the recent ARRL article on BPL in Manassas VA? Ouch! They are losing money and will be closing it down soon, so the article says. BPL is a poor technology and is being eclipsed by cable, fiber optics and various wireless technologies, that are all better technologies than BPL.
